The following message has been received from Karen Hales, Bert Deverill's daughter.
If anyone is interested in having these magazines or know of an archive that would like to receive them would they please contact Lin Cooper at postmaster@keithlincooper.force9.co.uk
I've been sorting through some of dad's things and have found a load of copies of the above W-D inhouse magazine, from the first one in September 1965 through to July 1974. It was quite nostalgic flicking through them, recognising a few names! I even found a photo of myself sitting with lots of other children at the annual Children's Christmas Party (held on 5 Jan 1974!). Another photo in the March 1967 edition was of the W-D football team, including Harry Wells, which I have scanned and sent to Beverley, his daughter. One of the regular items was something called "Personality Girl" (not very pc these days!!) which was a profile on a female staff member! Other editions show John Mercer entertaining at another Christmas party and in the July 1973 edition, a welcome to Bruce Urquhart joining the Estimating Dept!
Anyway, I don't know if they would be of interest to anyone in the 21 Club or if there is some archive somewhere that would be interested in taking them. There are about 50 of them. Are you aware of anything or would someone in the 21 Club know or be interested in taking them? It seems a shame to just throw them in the recycling bin! I've attached a photo of the first one and then some random copies; they are a bit bigger than A5 in size. (Use Backspace to come back)
Cheryl Adams (as was)
Today 15/02/18, Tony Maitland happened to bump into Cheryl Adams (as was)- formerly of the Finance Dept- at the Balcombe Tea Rooms. She asked to be remembered to all the colleagues at Woodall Duckham. After BWD, she worked at M&S, then raised a family after which she worked for a recruitment agency. She is keeping well.
We regret to have to record the deaths of the following members:
Petr Schassens
Lin received a letter on 31st August 2023 from Peter Schaessens' daughter Carol, saying that he passed away at the age of almost 97 in July 2023 in an Exmouth nursing home where he had been living for 5 months. He settled in well and enjoyed a daily glass of wine in the company of other residents with whom he had a surprising amount in common. A celebration of his life took place at Exeter Crematorium on 15 August.
In March 2018 Peter wrote to say that at 91 he found the long rail journey from Lympstone somewhat tiring. He would normally stay for a few days with his son Bill but sadly he had passed away and for these reasons Peter felt that he wouldn't be able to attend further WD Club lunches. His daughter Heather also pre-deceased him in 2020.
Bob Wilkinson
Joan Morgan rang to let Lin know that Bob Wilkinson, husband of Rita Wilkinson, passed away after a fall at home on 10 July, 2023.
David Powdrill
David's wife, Hilary wrote to inform us that David died on June 7th. He was 86 years old . The committal is family only.
John Farrow
Mick Austin wrote that: John passed away on the 6th of June in East Surrey Hospital. The funeral will be on the 30th June at Surrey and Sussex Crematorium at 3pm. ( St. Richards Chapel). All Welcome, and after at 19 Little Bridges Close, Southwater. RH13 9HH
Peter Sellers
Mike Boyes reported the death of Peter Sellers who worked as a Field Expediter for the procurement dept. He was based in the North West and was with BWD during the 1980's and 1990's. He passed away at home on Sunday, March 5th from heart failure.
Stanley Grieve
Stanley's son Nigel wrote:
I am reporting the death of my father Stanley Grieve of Woodall-Duckham's Piping Department. Made redundant on 31 January 1988 by Babcock Woodall-Duckham Limited.
Going in as a stroke patient on Monday, 6 February 2023, he died in East Surrey Hospital on Friday, 24 February 2023 aged 97. It was COVID that got him in the end.
Further to this I have organised an informal gathering at The Bull pub, Horley, RH6 8DE, 12 until 3 PM, 22/03/2023. The pub is a short distance from Stanley's house and he used to visit the pub almost every day.
Bill Southwell
Chris Openshaw reports that he has heard from Bill's wife that he passed away earlier this year (2022).

Jen Tomson
Rod Crowder wrote:
I am writing to let you know that Jen passed away in April this year. She was diagnosed in Nov with a lung tumor, which failed to respond to treatment. She passed away quietly at home on 8th April 2022.Lin Commented:
I'm sure you would know Jen, she was the telex operator for a long time and then in charge of the Maintenance Team; a very capable and easy-going girl who was younger than me.
Tom Smith
Chris Openshaw wrote:
Tom Smith died yesterday 11 July 2022. He had been suffering ill health for some time.
Tom was Manager of Process Engineering reporting to Mike Calver. Someone outside W-D said to me that Tom and David Jones were two of the best Process Engineers in the business.
Tom was a dour Yorkshire man who didn't suffer fools lightly and some might argue with that opinion. Tom and his wife moved back to Seaford from the West Country a couple of years ago. His funeral may be in Mid-Sussex.
John Ryley
John Ryley's daughter Jane informed us that John passed away at home on Sunday, 29 May 2022 at the age of 91. As well as Jane, he leaves a son Matt and five granddaughters. Although confused at times he didn't lose his ability to answer quiz show (and University Challenge) questions and kept his carers astonished identifying places that he had visited the world over when they popped up on TV programmes and as you know he had travelled a great deal with WD.
John's funeral will be held at Worthing Crematorium at 1pm on Friday 24th June. All wanting to pay their respects are welcome to join family and friends at the service and afterwards at John's house in Horsham for sandwiches and cake and to raise a glass in his honour. For catering purposes please let Lin Cooper know if you will be attending the wake.
Bert Deverill
Bert Deverill's daughter Karen emailed the following information:
I'm sorry to tell you that dad passed away on Sunday 22 May; he was 88 years old. He joined WD in 1949, a few months before his 16th birthday! Apart from 2 year's National Service, he stayed with the company until 1996, when he took early retirement following his heart attack.
Dad died in Hartwood House Care Home, Lyndhurst, where he had been living since May 2021, following a stroke on 1st January 2021. He continued to try to remain active but his mobility declined last autumn due to arthritis in his hip, which gave him a lot of pain, and to his failing heart, which weakened him. The last few months have been tough, as dad gradually faded away, although rapidly more so in the last few weeks.
Bert's funeral will be on Wednesday 15 June at 2.30pm at Test Valley Crematorium, Romsey, Hants. There will be a webcast of the funeral, which will be both live and available to view for 28 days, details to follow. Family flowers only but any donations to the British Heart Foundation will be gratefully accepted.
A link is available to watch Bert's funeral either as it takes place or for up to 28 days thereafter. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity please contact Lin Cooper on 01293 512583 and she will provide you with the link.
If you wish to make a donation to The British Heart Foundation, in lieu of flowers, it can be made online via http://www.ahcheater.co.uk in the Funeral Notices and Donations section.
Harry and Muriel Clegg
Alan Simmons has advised us that Harry Clegg and his wife Muriel have both passed away. Although Harry was never a member of the Club, many members will remember him from his time in Mechanical Engineering. Harry passed away on 8th January 2022, and Muriel joined him on 1st February 2022. They decided not to have funeral services.

Harry wells commented:
Ray Swansborough's funeral will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, 18 February 2022 at Worthing Crematorium, Horsham Road, Findon, West Sussex, BN14 0RG. After the company moved to Crawley he transferred to the Computer Department and later to the Construction Department. His interests included playing table tennis, along with Jim Flack, for the company.
Pat Ockenden
Joan Morgan has passed on the sad news that Pat Ockenden passed away on 20 December 2021. Her funeral will take place at the Surrey & Sussex Crematorium at 2.15pm on Thursday, 20 January 2022. She was Ian Vinter's secretary in Marketing Department for several years. In 1977 they stayed behind in Bucharest to type up the Romsit Contract, and that night the earthquake struck. They spent the night in the British Embassy and came home the next morning. The contract went ahead without delays.

He worsened at home over really a few days and was admitted to hospital on the 23rd July 2020, passing away just one week later on 30th July, peacefully in his sleep. A very aggressive lymphoma has been confirmed subsequently.
His funeral is next Wednesday, 19th August 2020 at 10.30 at Crawley Crematorium. While numbers are limited in current times, we do have a few spaces free if people would like to attend. They should email Tony's son David Butcher David.Butcher@petrofac.com by end of Sat 15th.
Colin Rumbles
Bill McClaren wrote on 24 April 2020:
Sadly I heard from Eddie Dunsmore (Ex WD) that Colin Rumbles had passed away around Christmas time 2019. The last time that I worked with Colin on a W-D site was at Baglan Bay, Wales, about 1968, I was about 18.
I worked on the same site as Colin when employed with ETM when the Sheffield area was flooded around 2007.
For all the people who knew Colin, I cannot repeat the welcome I received after 40 years.
Tony Brimble
Lin received an email from Bill Fortescue on 10th March 2020:
As some of you will now know, Tony Brimble passed away over the weekend having lost his brave battle with cancer.
Probably one of the most positive people I've met in life.

I shall miss our trips to the tapas bar in Waterloo and our escapades on the Beaulieu River.
Sadly missed

In an annual exchange of correspondence Allan Roberts wife has told me that sadly, after a long illness, Allan died on 6th June.Julia Roberts then wrote:Although I didn't work directly alongside Allan he site managed a number of W-D projects including those in Brazil and Hong Kong. After he retired from W-D he lived in Portugal for a number of years where we met and I received a most hospitable welcome. He, and his wife Julia, returned to live in the UK a couple of years ago.
I'm sure some of the project management team can fill you in with more details of contracts in which he was involved and they, and Engineers, who worked alongside Allan, will be saddened by this news.
Allan joined W-D in 1978 after the breakdown of his first marriage. He contacted Jim Ferguson with whom he'd worked with at CJB, who offered him a job in Crawley. I met Allan at this time. He was always happiest on overseas contracts, being very successful in getting contracts finished on time and in budget, even though he ruffled a lot of feathers in the process. He took early retirement in 1994, and retired to Portugal, where we ran a guest house until 2017. He contracted Gullieme - Barre virus through a spider bite in 1998 and though he recovered never regained full health. In 2009 he had a relapse and was diagnosed with CIDP, the chronic form of Guilleme Barre. He rallied for several years, but we realised his health was never going to return and made the decision to return to the UK. In was not until 2017 we were able to do so.
His health continued to deteriorate, but he enjoyed being back. Especially as he was able to drive his beloved XJS. His death was very sudden and unexpected.
He never wanted to have any contact with Babcock after he retired. Which I felt was a shame, even more so now when I look at the list of those who have passed on. So few are left. I have many fond memories of so many of them.
Allan had four children from his first marriage, and I am lucky that they live locally, and I have only lost contact with one. Amy our daughter still lives in Portugal.
Julia Roberts. ( Allan's wife for forty one years)

We have been informed that Stuart Gray passed away in July 2019. We have no other details.
Brian Wright and Peter Fuell
Chris Openshaw wrote on 13th September 2019:
Just received news that Brian Wright and Peter Fuell have died. Brian Wright was recruited because of his specialist knowledge of nuclear radiation. BW-D negotiated a turnkey contract with BNFL for a new facility and were given the responsibility of producing the Safety Case. This was the first occasion BNFL had sub-contracted out this responsibility. Brian formed a key role in this specialist team. When the contract was cancelled as it was not needed due to delays to Thorp etc, Brian took on the role of Company Radiation Monitor. He issued monitors to staff which measured their exposure and kept personnel records etc. When the company pulled out of nuclear work Brian left and worked for BNFL. His funeral is in Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield next Wednesday (18th Sep 2019) at 3.00 p.m. I have also heard on the local grapevine that Peter Fuell has died. If my memory is correct he was employed as a Project Documentation Clerk. I have no details of his funeral but if anyone wants to know I could go on the grapevine.

Kenneth Ronald Shaw (5/1/25-7/10/14)
Kenメs funeral will be held at ALL SAINTS CHURCH in LINDFIELD (near HAYWARDS HEATH) at 15:00 / 3pm on Friday 17 October 2014.
Refreshments afterwards at the BENT ARMS PUBLIC HOUSE, 98 High Street, Lindfield, HAYWARDS HEATH, RH16 2HP. Both the church and the pub are located directly on the HIGH STREET in LINDFIELD, about 100 yards apart.
There is a good-sized car park behind the pub, so it may be easiest to park there, and walk to the church, along the High Street. Alternatively, for those requiring closer-access/parking (eg Disabled) the church does have its own car park ヨ called モWilderness Car Parkヤ ヨ though this is only accessible via the road down the side of the pub, and space is limited. There is a pedestrian access gate from the car park to the side of the church.
There is access from the pub car park into the rear of the pub. There is only one bar, so we will have a number of reserved tables at that end of the ground floor, mostly between the bar and the garden.
Family flowers only, though if you would care to make a donation in memory of Ken, then his chosen charity the last time he was in the Chair was the Sussex Air Ambulance. This has since evolved and is now the KENT, SURREY & SUSSEX AIR AMBULANCE TRUST, based out of Marden in Kent, and Redhill in Surrey.

If it refers to モourヤ Derrick, he was a モprinterヤ in the sense that he worked in the W-D print room.
Eve: He did return to South Africa, after majority rule in 1995, but only to visit his Mother- then aged 100- in Newlands, Cape Town.
I met him a couple of times in Crawley Town centre, when he confided that he had had lung infections, brought on by his smoking. Given how ill he looked then, I am surprised that he lasted as long as he has done.
I cannot remember whether he retired before AMEC took over BWD (Babcock Contractors) or whether he was made redundant in Oct 1997, the same time as me. If so, he would have been 64/65 then.
Lin had a call from John Baister on 15th November 2009 to say that Kit Gatford died 2 weeks ago and that her funeral is to be held at 3pm on 17 November 2009 at the Sussex & Surrey Crematorium, Crawley. I believe the cause of death was cancer.
Also Mrs Jean Boyce left a message on Lin's phone to say that Geoff Boyce passed away on the 6th November 2009 aged 83. The notice in the Mid Sussex Times of 12 November 2009 stated "No Funeral". Frank Hart has been in touch with Jean and confirmed that Geoff wished that his body be donated to Cancer Research.

Terry Fisher died Friday, 20th July 2007, aged 75. His wife Pam tells me that it was a relatively short illness and he died quietly in his sleep.
Terry was a Woodall-Duckham site commissioning manager with world wide experience but particularly in coke ovens. He was in charge of the start up of some of W-D's most successfull contracts - particularly Scunthorpe and Acominas in Brasil.
Terry was a happy character, always comfortable with the client and always strongly focussed on a successfull completion of his reponsibilities. He was a lover of music and very proficient piano player. He will be fondly remembered.

Freddie Wagg passed away early in December 2004, Harold Perks reported. Freddie had just passed his 100th Birthday.
More sad news I'm afraid. We have to inform members of the sudden and very unexpected death of Derek Brobyn who passed away on 2 December 2004.
On 1 December Derek went to bed seemingly OK (after that day entertaining some children at a party with his keyboard, as he often did.)
He suffered a perforated stomach ulcer during the night. By the time his wife Jenny woke up, he had lost a lot of blood. He was rushed into hospital, but unfortunately died there later that day.
His funeral has already taken place.

We were advised on 17th August 2004 that Phil Pike (he was one of the project engineers under Les Kearney on the Scunthorpe job) passed away on Thursday, 12th August 2004, from a massive heart attack. No further detail available.
Peter Broadbent pete.broadbent@btinternet.com advised us that his father, Phil Broadbent, passed away on Christmas Day 2003, while staying with them for Christmas. He wrote:
He had been to midnight mass with us the night before, but had heart failure when getting up on Christmas morning. His death was quick, and just the way he had often said he wanted to go. It was therefore a good end for him (though obviously quite a shock for us all). He was 83. This year he had seen his beloved Sussex win the Cricket County Championship for the first time. And he died while with his family, not alone at home. Weメre grateful for every memory of him.
His funeral will be on Friday 9th January 2004 at Christ Church Brondesbury, London NW6, at 1.45 p.m. The church is next door to our house here, and we shall gather here at 1.30 pm and walk with him into church (weather permitting). The service will be followed by a private cremation at West London Crematorium at 3.00 p.m.
If you are coming to the funeral, you are most welcome to come to the house beforehand (just turn up anytime; it will be good to meet some of Dadメs relations and friends whom we have heard him talk about but never met or not seen for many years). You are also very welcome to come back to the house for refreshments after the service in church.
For some, having the funeral in London may make it difficult for you to attend. If that is the case for you, we quite understand. We are in any case grateful for your thoughts and prayers.
We suggest no flowers except close family. If you would like to make a charitable donation in Philメs memory, can we suggest the Horsham Museum Society, of which he was a great supporter? We are happy to pass donations on.
Please do let others know of his death. We have tried to contact all those in his address books, but there may be some of his friends from Woodall-Duckham or from Sussex Cricket who are not in the loop. Thank you.
Peter Spalding died peacefully on 11th November 2003. The Funeral will be at 12.30 am on Wednesday 19th November at All Saints Church, Crawley Down. Everyone will be welcome at the house afterwards. No flowers; donations if wished to St. Catherine's Hospice, Crawley.
Lin received a letter this morning (14 Nov 2003) from Tony Newton to say that his father, Arthur, died at the end of last week. He was in hospital recovering from an operation - but unfortunately is age (88) meant he wasn't quite strong enough to pull through. His funeral will take place next Tuesday (18 November 2003) in Oxford.

CORRECTION - John Allen, 2001
We are happy to correct this as we received an E-mail from John Allen, 22 October 2014:
Have just found your website and was concerned to learn that I died in 2001!
Seriously, I assume that there was another John Allen rather than an erroneous report of my demise.
I did attend a couple of your meetings in the early part of the noughties but lost touch after we moved to Wiltshire in December 2005. I worked in the WD Secretarial Department in the late sixties/early seventies and joined Babcock some 20 years later as Group Company Secretary. John Moor will remember me as we used to car share on our journeys to and from Crawley.
I am now 73 and have 3 grandchildren with another on the way. Would be glad to hear from someone, especially John Moor or Harry Wells.
Regards John Allen
